There are many foods that your pets should avoid on Thanksgiving. Some of these foods can be toxic to pets, cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. Keep a close eye on your pets and ensure that your friends and family are aware that these foods are off limits. No table scraps. If your guests can’t resist giving them something, keep a pet treat jar at the table. You can find pet treats that have flavors like turkey or pumpkin, so your guests and your pets feel that they are participating in the Thanksgiving festivities. Save your pet from a trip to the pet er by ensuring they avoid these foods:
- Turkey skin
- Under cooked meat
- Cranberry Sauce
- Green bean casserole
- Stuffing and gravy
- Turkey bones
- Bread dough and cake batter
- Mashed potatoes
- Fruit salads
- Walnuts and macadamia nuts
- Pumpkin and sweet potato pie
Exercise your pet early in the day. A tired pet is good. Ensure they are fed their regular meal and make room for some extra treats for good behavior. Supervise interactions between pets and kids as sometimes kids will walk around with food in their hands at eye level to your pets. Some pets may take the food right from their hand or wait for it to drop.
A few other things to take in to consideration is that your pet could feel nervous. Make sure there is a safe, quiet place your pet can retire to if it gets too overwhelming. There are also natural calming treats and sprays you can give ahead of time.
Don’t forget to check your pet’s tags and collar and ensure microchip id is up to date. When guests come and go, it might be easy for your pet to get out. Ask your guests to be careful with doors.
